From Wand to Lash: A Mascara Guide

mascara-wanderApplying Mascara – The Right Way

  • Don’t pump the wand in and out of the bottle. This pushes excess air into the tube which will make the mascara dry out faster causing exactly what you want to avoid: clumping and flaking. Instead, gently twist the back and forth or in circular motions to gather the desired amount of product.
  •  Before applying mascara, consider curling you lashes with an eyelash curler. If you decide to curl your lashes, begin at the root of the lashes being careful not to get any skin into the eyelash curler. Press the curler together and hold for about 10 seconds and move the curler out to the end of your lashes and repeat. Again, this step is optional but it does make for longer looking lashes and opens the eye.
  •  When you remove the wand from the bottle make sure to scrape off any excess mascara from the wand, especially towards the tip of the wand. This will help you avoid making your lashes clumpy and unwanted mess.
  • For the top lashes, look straight forward, holding the wand horizontally, place at the root of your lashes. Using a back-and-forth, wiggling motion to keep lashes from clumping together. While moving the wand up your lashes and sweep upward, to help give your lashes a curled effect. Keep repeating this until you get your lashes as thick as you want, usually 2 coats is enough.
  • Clinique Bottom Lash MascaraFor the bottom lashes, tilt your head forward slightly to keep from getting mascara elsewhere on your face. Hold the wand vertically and use wiggling motions starting at the roots, towards the tips of your lower lashes. In case of mess, you may want to fold a tissue in half, holding the edge just under your eye to prevent smearing etc. If desired, you can even purchase a mascara specifically for your lower lashes. Check out Clinique’s Bottom Lash Mascara : the brush was engineered to grasp and coat your tiniest lashes; while the expert formula resists pesky formulas.

Keep Lashes From Clumping

Lash combs are great to keep your lashes from clumping.  To use a lash comb, first applymascara at the lash base, and then wiggle the lash comb through to the tips of your lashes.
Don’t Be Afraid to Mix Mascaras

It’s okay to have two favorite mascaras, so why not combine them? Easily make your lashes pop by applying one coat of lengthening mascara, followed by one coat of a volumizing mascara.

Try a Colored Mascara

Estee-Lauder-Holiday-2010-Sumptuous-Extreme-Lash-Multiplying-Volume-Mascara

Basic mascara rules are simple:  Black works for everyone but can be harsh on light-skinned blondes.  Blondes should opt for brown/black by day and reserve black for night.  Burgundy or plum colors make blue eyes pop, as do blue mascaras.  Purple mascara looks great on brown eyes. Here’s a great example of hued mascara by Estee Lauder, it’s the Sumptous Extreme Lash Multiplying Volume Mascara in Extreme Violet. Estee Lauder carries a variety of colors from this line to add that pop of color to enhance your eyes.

Use a Mascara PrimerSmashbox Layer Lash Primer

Just like you do before applying foundation, prep your lashes with a primer.  The primer can help you get the most out of your mascara, while working with the formula to get maximum, lasting effects. Try Smashbox Layer Lash Primer, packed with strengthening and conditioning panthenol for longer, healther lashes.

Wait to Blink & Double-Check Once Dry

Before you blink or even think about touching around your eye area, wait a few minutes to let the mascara dry to prevent smudging, smearing, and raccoon eyes.

How to Fake A Good Morning

Rough nights & Rough mornings? Ease the stress, and find out how to get some sleep in peace and wake up in a better mood – or at least make it look like it’s a good morning.

Sleep: GET INTO THE MOOD

Falling asleep and staying asleep after a stressful day is almost impossible; however changing a few things to your bedtime routine may help you get into the mood with ease…

Herbal Tea Remedies

Stress, anxiety and sleepless nights are both common and frustrating. Alternative methods to drugs are becoming more popular, as people try to care for their bodies naturally. Instead of reaching for a pill to encourage sleep or a glass of wine to relax, make a cup of herbal tea and reap the rewards of a helpful and healthy alternative. By just sipping some tea about an half an hour before bed can help put your mind and body at ease, and prepare for rest.

Chamomile  chamomile-teaworks as a gentle sleep aid, and also soothes upset stomachs and nausea because of its amazing ability to calm nerves and to work as a sedative. It is one of the most popular herbs and is commonly combined with other natural herbs to soothe different health concerns. Particularly, if a part of your disruptive sleeping pattern is due to stomach pains, muscle aches, or even anxiety and nervousness – try some chamomile tea.

Lemon balm  is an alternative herbal aid if chamomile isn’t quite your thing. It is actually part of the mint family, and looks similar to a mint leaf. It’s a unique remedy for the relaxation of the whole body and mind and so is an effective herbal tea that helps sleeping difficulties and calms the whole mental and physical tension. It’s also perfect for digestive tract, strengthens the memory and other brain functions and is noted to improve moods as well.

Valerian tea is a long known sedative to deal with restlessness; it acts as a natural sedative to reduce anxiety. One of the most popular herbs for sleep, valerian root is also a herbal treatment for nerve and muscle disorders as well as fatigue and mental disorders. The tea contains essential oils extracted from the root of the valerian plant. While relieving your cramps and pains, it also stops your mind from racing and so that you can fall asleep more easily.

Peppermint  Drinking peppermint tea has a number of medicinal qualities to help conditions that can interfere with restful sleep, such as a nervous stomach, nausea, and other digestive and intestinal problems. A cup of peppermint tea at night naturally soothes  the body, preparing it for a restful night’s sleep. It also works well for headaches.

De-stress Your Body

Kiehls Creme de Corps Soy Milk Honey Whipped Body ButterThose long, hot baths (or showers) really can put your mind and body at ease and help you prep for bedtime. Escaping stress and clearing your mind can be as easy as simply massaging your scalp or calming your nerves with a long soak. Don’t fret, try out some new shampoo or body butter – it may be just what you need. I suggest Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter. Massage yourself with this luxurious formula infused with shea and jojoba butter, for maximum hydration and skin that’s soft and smooth to the touch.

Stop Counting Sheep

Why encourage a restless mind by counting sheep? At night you want to unwind and clear your head, not fill it with jibber-jabber to bore yourself to sleep. Instead, try to picture yourself in a serene setting (like the beach) anything that seems quite, serene, and free from outside stress. This way, you can meditate yourself to sleep so to speak.

Disconnect

You probably carry your phone with you every where you go, every single day – do you sleep with it though? It is not uncommon to have your phone next to your bed on the night stand so that in the morning you can immediately check your messages etc. But through the night, the last thing you need is another distraction to keep you up. Try turning the sound and vibrate off your phone (facing down so that the light won’t disturb you), or just turning it off completely to ensure a restful night.

Fake It: MAKE-UP FOR LOST TIME

Whether or not you got a full eight hours last night, the last thing you want to do is look like you had a rough night. Here’s a few tricks to help you look well rested, and feel ready to take on the day…

Wake Up Beautiful

Sure, that annoying alarm does it’s job by promptly waking you up, but it’s irritating. Wouldn’t you rather have the first thing you hear in the morning be welcoming while stimulating to your awareness and surroundings? Ditch that wretched buzzing alarm and try out something more harmonious and delightful – it could change how you look at waking up for good.

 Get Going

Foam Call

Days when you can’t hide from your agenda under covers, you can’t afford to spare not even one minute. Get going with a splash of water (a little colder than lukewarm) on your face to wake you up, or even take desperate measures and hit the shower! Though the water’s cold, it’s beneficial because you will be even more alert.  For an invigorating rinse off, try peppermint body washes that’ll wake you up head to toe. Try Soap & Glory’s Foam Call Body Wash. It’s a moisturizing body wash infused with grapeseed and peppermint oils, fruitiliquid fig, and orange waterjuice – perfect for that morning boost.

Scrub-a-dub!
Angels on Bare SkinRefresh your face, and scrub away the worries of yesterday behind. Use an exfoliating face wash to reveal healthy glowing skin, and get rid of ickyness. You may not be fully awake yet, but you’ll be ready to take on the day. Check out Lush Cosmetic’s Angels on Bare Skin exfoliating face cleanser. This gentle lavender scrub is preservative free, and fit for all skin types. For heavenly soft and balanced skin, this wash blended with ground almonds, rose, and lavender will help you gt there.
Freshen Up & Moisturize
Philosophy Breath of Fresh AirWell moisturized skin, is healthy skin; thus, when you moisturized you’ll look better rested. Take the time to show your skin a little t.l.c. especially your face. May I suggest Philosophy’s Take a Deep Breath Face Moisturizer? This oil-free formula is an energizing oxygen gel cream that is revitalizing and protective to your skin. The blend of antioxidants combat signs of stress while the oxygen detoxifies skin and supports skin cell respiration.

Mark Save the Day Anti-Acne Concealer Stick

Lighten Up
While there are a zillion eye creams that promise to help dark circles, none of them offer an instant fix. Concealer, on the other hand, is a sure thing—so start by choosing a creamy formula that is slightly lighter than your skin (but be careful not to go more than one shade lighter than your natural skin tone). Cover just the dark areas after applying foundation, not the entire under-eye, and resist the urge to overblend. A great product to try is the Save the Day Anti-Acne Concealer by mark.
NYX Liquid IlluminatorAdd Sparkle
Put just a tiny touch of shimmer cream right in that little hollow in the inner corners of the eyes. Use a golden color if you have dark skin, silvery or pearlescent if you’re pale, and then blend well with a Q-tip. You will instantly look refreshed and awake. Try a dab of Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator by NYX.
Defined Liner
Tarte EmphasEYES Waterproof Clay Shadow/Liner
To define your upper lashes, go with something a little less severe than black, like a charcoal or a chocolate brown, and push the point into the lash line as you go. Then wing it outward and upward just the tiniest bit at the end. This will give the illusion of more opened eyes. Try Tarte’s EmphasEYES Waterproof Clay Shadow/Liner. The deep chocolate and navy shades are great to achieve smoldering looks, or even striking liner if you wish.
Too Faced Sweethearts Perfect Flush BlushBlushing Beauty
Using cream, or baked powder blush, apply a light layer of bright blush. These formulas are great to give the appeal of blush that has melted into your skin so that it looks almost natural. Try applying the color slightly higher on the face than usual when you need to look more awake. Use your fingers to rub it on the highest point of the apples, right over the edge of the cheek bone, blurring that line a little will help draw attention away from any darkness or puffiness there. Check out Too Faced’s Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush for a baked blush trio combining peach coral, and bubble gum pink shades for a enhanced, primped glowing finish.

My Favorite Things (February 2013)

Here’s a list of some of my favorite self care/ grooming products right now; read on and maybe you’ll find something worth trying for yourself!

Lush Cosmetics: Shine So Bright Split End Treatment

From the hair dryer, to the flat iron, the occasional curling iron, and some color treatment here and there, my hair needs some extra love and care. This hair repairing balm is one of my newer purchases, but has been proven to be worthy of become staple item to include in my hair products. Shine So BrightThis product works great on wet or dry hair, and will protect your ends from those hot tools you may use on your hair: Just scoop a small amount with your fingertips and rub in the balm until it become transparent, and then stroke onto the ends of your hair.  Although it comes in a small tin, it actually lasts for over 3 months and is well worth the price of ten dollars. If you are unfamiliar with Lush Cosmetics , you should seriously check them out! They have become one of my favorite cosmetics companies because they do not test on animals, all of their products are hand-made with fresh and organic ingredients, and not to mention everything smells so good!

Lush Cosmetics:Tea Tree Water

As a toner, Lush’s Tea Tree Water is my saving grace – it is targeted to help oily (or combination), blemish prone skin to find the right balance and encourage soft, clean skin. In the form of a spray, I find this product to be suitable for anyone on the go, and makes usage completely sanitary.Tea Tree Water Most customers have said the product is great for daily use, those with sensitive skin, treating redness, minimizing pores, and uneven skin tone, and I couldn’t agree more! I use this toner every day and actually look forward to it! Your skin instantly feels fresh, smooth, and any excess dirt and oil is diminished.

Grease Lightning

Lush Cosmetics: Grease Lightning

If you suffer from blemish prone, or oil prone skin and have yet to find that perfect product that soothes your skin, you may want to try Grease Lightning. This particular product was definitely on my shopping list when I made one of my trips to my nearest Lush destination because I too have these concerns and heard that this is a must try! When you feel like you’ve tried every product on the shelf, and have too often been disappointed, this tea tree treatment makes up for everything. In the form of a gel, this treatment only takes a small amount to provide full strength results to sooth troubled skin and provide a matte finish.

Lush Cosmetics: Herbalism

Known to unclog impurities from pores, this face cleanser has become one of my all-time favorite washes I have ever used. My skin is unusually sensitive and I always have to look out for certain ingredients and chemicals in the products I use on my face and this one is perfectly harmless with natural ingredients.Herbalism It’s a gentle exfoliant (gentle enough to use daily) that clears up blemishes on oily skin and can be paired with Grease Lighting to help even skin tone. I would have to say that because Lush insists on all natural products, and really focuses on quality products, I really look forward to using all of these products in the morning and at night so that my face routine isn’t so much of a chore, but more of an enjoyable activity that I know is beneficial for my skin.

Freeman Beauty: Pomegranate Facial Revealing Peel-Off Mask

I love DIY Face Masks, but sometimes I go for pre-made masks instead. I really like Freeman products because they are affordable and are high in quality in regard to product, and results. Pomegranate Peel-Off MaskThis Pomegranate Peel-Off Mask is one of my favorites because it is just what my skin needs when I am under stress, and want to revive texture, and balance.  When used 2 times a week (as suggested) the results are clear: your pores absorb less oil and your skin is free of impurities, not to mention soft and supple. For a quick refresher for your facial routine, I highly recommend this product, and it’s great for all skin types!

Freeman Beauty: Pomegranate Sugar Body Scrub

Sugar Body Scrub

Perfect to for anyone looking to get that all-over natural glow on their body, Freeman’s Sugar Body Scrubs work wonders! I particularly have grown fond of the Pomegranate Sugar Scrub because the rejuvenating formula is incredibly refreshing to my skin, and smoothing for softness.  It smells good enough to eat (though I wouldn’t suggest consumption), adding this scrub to your shower routine will only make you love your skin even more!

Garnier: Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-CreamMoisture Rescue Gel-Cream

Although my skin is oil-prone, I still cannot shy away from including a moisturizer in my skin care regimen. I have used Garnier’s Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream for over a year and fell in love from the first use. The oil-free formula makes this gel cream perfect to balance my skin while still providing key nutrients to keep my skin’s moisture in tact. It’s lightweight, non-greasy, and is great for daytime and nighttime use for lasting hydration.

Herbal Essences: Touchably Smooth Split End Protector

Split End ProtectorAlong with my Lush Shine So Bright treatment, I have been a loyal user of Herbal Essences Touchably Smooth Split End Protector for at least three years now. My long locks need all of the help to prevent breakage and promotion of  healthy, strong hair in all aspects, and this cream is a prime supporter of all of my concerns. I use some serums to protect my hair from heat too, but the split end treatments really quench my hair and at the same time enhances smoothness and silkiness for touchable looks.

Earth Therapeutics: Organic Nail & Cuticle Care

Nail and Cuticle TreatmentMade with an all natural formula, I love Earth Therapeutics Organic Nail and Cuticle Care cream. With it, I am able to nourish my nails and cuticles with essential oils and vitamins that will strengthen the nails, while promoting health, and soften my cuticles. It’s just a must-have item in my manicure drawer to deep condition my hands with beautiful results.

So those are my current favorite items that I use on generally a day-to-day basis, I hope you have some ideas of some new products to try or will even check-out some of these brands to find the perfect products for you.

Beauty Food

Did you know that what you put into your body can affect the outside? Here’s a list of some foods that promote healthy, beautiful skin and why they’re great.

blueberriesBlueberries: Yes, eating a cup full of blueberries can provide benefits like a glowing skin, healthy and shiny hair and it is even good for your eyes.

Olives & Extra Virgin Olive Oil
We need a source of good fats in our diet to help us absorb nutrients from our vegetables and fruits, keep our cells supple, skin glowing, brains sharp and mood upbeat. We also need dietary fat in order to burn fat. Extra virgin olive oil contains oleic acid, which helps us to absorb the omega-3s and other vitamins and nutrients from our foods.

HE_dried-beans-02_s3x4_leadBeans & Lentils
When it comes to maintaining beautiful skin and keeping unwanted pounds at bay, beans and lentils are a body’s best friend. They are very low-glycemic and unlike sugary, starchy foods, won’t cause a rapid rise in blood sugar. They are anti-inflammatory foods, key in preventing dull, dry, wrinkled sagging skin and body fat.

Fish
Wild salmon and other cold water fish (salmon, sardines, herring, trout, etc.) are great sources of protein, necessary to maintain and repair the body–including the skin on a cellular level. These fish are high in anti-inflammatory omega 3 essential fatty acids, which keeps skin radiant, supple and wrinkle-free, moods upbeat and brain functioning at optimal levels.

Green Tea
Green tea contains polyphenols, which help eliminate inflammation-producing free radicals. Polyphenols protect healthy cells from cancer causing DNA damage, while ushering cancer cells to their death. Another remarkable finding is the power of green tea polyphenols known as EGCG to reactivate dying skin cells. Researchers consider this reactivation to be a potential benefit to skin diseases such as psoriasis, ulcers, rosacea, wounds–and wrinkles.

Tips to Naturally Glowing Skin

The most natural-looking glow comes from well-cared-for skin. Here’s how to get it.

Splash with Care

Here’s the cold, hard truth: Rinsing your face with icy water won’t tighten your pores. And using hot water, though it may feel good, can dehydrate skin. Lukewarm is best, and if you have redness, try cool — not cold — water, to help constrict blood vessels.dd_btbm_1

  • Use a gentle soap. Unless you have exceptionally oily skin, this should do the trick for most people. Remember that you want to clean your skin, not completely strip it of all oils — if it feels tight and dry after washing, you’re using something too strong.
  • Lather the soap around all the areas of your face. Make sure you get your forehead (especially along the hairline), cheeks, nose, upper lip, chin, and jawline.
  • Rinse off by splashing water on your face. Using a washcloth or rag to roughly wipe your skin clean can irritate it more. Instead, bend your face over the sink, cup your hands together, and bring up small amounts of water to splash over your face. About 10 splashes should do it.
  • Pat dry. Again, don’t roughly rub your skin dry with a towel. Instead, dry it with small, gentle pats or let it air dry.
  • Always wash off your makeup at night. Even if you’re too tired to do the rest of the routine before you go to bed, at least make sure your makeup comes off your face. Not only does this prevent it from clogging up your pores and causing breakouts while you sleep, it also stops you from smearing bacteria on your pillow — where it can get into your skin night after night.

Figure Out Your Skin Type

D.I.Y. test:

Rinse your clean face with 10 splashes of lukewarm water, then pat it dry and wait 45 minutes.

If your face feels tight or looks ashy, you probably have dry skin.

If it’s shiny all over, it’s oily.

If just your forehead, nose, and chin — the T-zone — are shiny, you likely have combination skin.

And if your skin is easily irritated, that usually means it’s sensitive.

Give Products Time to Work

Changing your products every couple of weeks can also be counterproductive.

Finish the entire tube or bottle of a skincare potion before you decide how well it works.

You might, though, want to adjust your beauty regimen seasonally, swapping, say, the oil-free moisturizer you use in the summer for one that’s more emollient during the winter when frigid temperatures and indoor heating can rob your skin of moisture.

The exception: If your skin reacts with swelling, redness, or burning to a new product you’ve tried, stop using it immediately.

A Balanced Life Leads to Your Best Skin

  • Work out. Cardio is what will give your skin that glow because it stimulates blood flow. It’s also healthy for your body and will make you stronger.glass-of-water
  • Drink up. Aim to get 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. The water will clear your skin and make it glow because it makes it easier for your body to flush out toxins quickly.
  • Eat a healthy diet. You are what you eat, and incorporating healthy food like vegetables, fruits, grains, and protein will help.

»Omega 3 Fatty Acids found in fish and walnuts is especially beneficial to your skin.

»Vitamin C will help existing pimples heal faster, so eating a few servings of things like citrus fruits will help.

»Eat fiber-rich foods (fresh vegetables, nuts, fruits all with skins on) to help keep a fine balance.

»Try to consume less than 45g of sugar on a daily basis.

»Cut down on salty foods. Eating too much salt can make your face look bloated.

Use a toner neutrogena-alcohol-free-toner-8.5oz-1

A toner removes excess oil and dirt from your skin that the soap missed, in addition to closing your pores. Not everyone needs to use a toner, but some people find it helpful.

  • Put a few drops onto a cotton ball or pad. Swipe it lightly over your skin.
  • Only use astringent if your skin is exceptionally oily. Astringent is a stronger type of toner that can be up to 60% alcohol. If your skin tends to be dry, using astringent could actually cause acne by driving your oil glands to overcompensate.
  • Witch hazel is a natural alternative to buying synthetic toner/astringent.

Consider applying toner to only the areas of your skin that tend to break out. For instance, you might only use it on your nose or forehead.

BGC04NP_mxMoisturize twice daily

Using lotion in the morning acts as a primer for your makeup, helping it “stick” to your face throughout the day. Moisturizing at night helps your skin repair itself and stave off wrinkles. Bottom line, it’s one of the best things you can do for glowing skin over the long term.

  • Consider using a lighter moisturizer during the day. If you’re prone to breakouts, save the heavy cream moisturizer for nighttime and use a light or gel moisturizer during the day.
  • Don’t forget your neck and décolletage. These areas can get super dry and irritated if you never moisturize them.

Exfoliate once a week images (1)

If your skin tends to be dry and flaky, a weekly exfoliation can clear out dead skin cells. Find an exfoliant that has a super fine grain, and don’t rub it roughly into your skin — use light pressure and gentle motions.

Protect your skin from the sun

Avoid leathery, tough skin by applying a light sunscreen every time you plan to be outside. The lack of sun damage will keep your skin dewy and supple for years to come. Remember, it only takes 15 minutes to get a sunburn, so be prepared.

  • Stick to SPF 30 — anything higher doesn’t have much more benefit.
  • Search the makeup aisle for spray-on sunscreens that are light and dry.
  • Use a foundation or tinted moisturizer with sunscreen, so your face is already covered.

Quick Tips

  • Tea tree oil with 15% concentration works wonders for Acne-prone and blemished skin. Apply directly onto the acne areas and keep it overnite. This might cause some dryness but it’s totally harmless. In the morning, after washing your face with a neutral-ph face wash, apply a mild moisturizer and ta-da your skin will glow!
  • Make sure you have a cleanser and moisturizer made for your skin type.
  • Have patience – you should see improvements in about two weeks.
  • If you have sensitive skin, try mixing small amounts of castor and body oils onto your troubled acne spots once a week after opening your pores with warm water and steam. This may sound counter productive, but it really helps.
  • Change bed covers at least every 4 weeks (better every 2) bacteria stays on your pillow case and covers.
  • Be sure to cut your nails as they can hold a lot of bacteria which you don’t see.
  • Work out at least thrice a week even if its for 30 mins only. It improves skin glow.
  • Never try to bleach the skin artificially; it causes dryness and rips off your skin of essential oils.
  • Don’t use toothpaste or lemon juice to clear acne, it may dry out your skin and make it feel worse. If you do decide to use lemon juice as a chemical (acid) exfoliant, you can replace the lost oils afterwards with a moisturizer or olive oil.
