From Wand to Lash: A Mascara Guide

mascara-wanderApplying Mascara – The Right Way

  • Don’t pump the wand in and out of the bottle. This pushes excess air into the tube which will make the mascara dry out faster causing exactly what you want to avoid: clumping and flaking. Instead, gently twist the back and forth or in circular motions to gather the desired amount of product.
  •  Before applying mascara, consider curling you lashes with an eyelash curler. If you decide to curl your lashes, begin at the root of the lashes being careful not to get any skin into the eyelash curler. Press the curler together and hold for about 10 seconds and move the curler out to the end of your lashes and repeat. Again, this step is optional but it does make for longer looking lashes and opens the eye.
  •  When you remove the wand from the bottle make sure to scrape off any excess mascara from the wand, especially towards the tip of the wand. This will help you avoid making your lashes clumpy and unwanted mess.
  • For the top lashes, look straight forward, holding the wand horizontally, place at the root of your lashes. Using a back-and-forth, wiggling motion to keep lashes from clumping together. While moving the wand up your lashes and sweep upward, to help give your lashes a curled effect. Keep repeating this until you get your lashes as thick as you want, usually 2 coats is enough.
  • Clinique Bottom Lash MascaraFor the bottom lashes, tilt your head forward slightly to keep from getting mascara elsewhere on your face. Hold the wand vertically and use wiggling motions starting at the roots, towards the tips of your lower lashes. In case of mess, you may want to fold a tissue in half, holding the edge just under your eye to prevent smearing etc. If desired, you can even purchase a mascara specifically for your lower lashes. Check out Clinique’s Bottom Lash Mascara : the brush was engineered to grasp and coat your tiniest lashes; while the expert formula resists pesky formulas.

Keep Lashes From Clumping

Lash combs are great to keep your lashes from clumping.  To use a lash comb, first applymascara at the lash base, and then wiggle the lash comb through to the tips of your lashes.
Don’t Be Afraid to Mix Mascaras

It’s okay to have two favorite mascaras, so why not combine them? Easily make your lashes pop by applying one coat of lengthening mascara, followed by one coat of a volumizing mascara.

Try a Colored Mascara

Estee-Lauder-Holiday-2010-Sumptuous-Extreme-Lash-Multiplying-Volume-Mascara

Basic mascara rules are simple:  Black works for everyone but can be harsh on light-skinned blondes.  Blondes should opt for brown/black by day and reserve black for night.  Burgundy or plum colors make blue eyes pop, as do blue mascaras.  Purple mascara looks great on brown eyes. Here’s a great example of hued mascara by Estee Lauder, it’s the Sumptous Extreme Lash Multiplying Volume Mascara in Extreme Violet. Estee Lauder carries a variety of colors from this line to add that pop of color to enhance your eyes.

Use a Mascara PrimerSmashbox Layer Lash Primer

Just like you do before applying foundation, prep your lashes with a primer.  The primer can help you get the most out of your mascara, while working with the formula to get maximum, lasting effects. Try Smashbox Layer Lash Primer, packed with strengthening and conditioning panthenol for longer, healther lashes.

Wait to Blink & Double-Check Once Dry

Before you blink or even think about touching around your eye area, wait a few minutes to let the mascara dry to prevent smudging, smearing, and raccoon eyes.

How to Fake A Good Morning

Rough nights & Rough mornings? Ease the stress, and find out how to get some sleep in peace and wake up in a better mood – or at least make it look like it’s a good morning.

Sleep: GET INTO THE MOOD

Falling asleep and staying asleep after a stressful day is almost impossible; however changing a few things to your bedtime routine may help you get into the mood with ease…

Herbal Tea Remedies

Stress, anxiety and sleepless nights are both common and frustrating. Alternative methods to drugs are becoming more popular, as people try to care for their bodies naturally. Instead of reaching for a pill to encourage sleep or a glass of wine to relax, make a cup of herbal tea and reap the rewards of a helpful and healthy alternative. By just sipping some tea about an half an hour before bed can help put your mind and body at ease, and prepare for rest.

Chamomile  chamomile-teaworks as a gentle sleep aid, and also soothes upset stomachs and nausea because of its amazing ability to calm nerves and to work as a sedative. It is one of the most popular herbs and is commonly combined with other natural herbs to soothe different health concerns. Particularly, if a part of your disruptive sleeping pattern is due to stomach pains, muscle aches, or even anxiety and nervousness – try some chamomile tea.

Lemon balm  is an alternative herbal aid if chamomile isn’t quite your thing. It is actually part of the mint family, and looks similar to a mint leaf. It’s a unique remedy for the relaxation of the whole body and mind and so is an effective herbal tea that helps sleeping difficulties and calms the whole mental and physical tension. It’s also perfect for digestive tract, strengthens the memory and other brain functions and is noted to improve moods as well.

Valerian tea is a long known sedative to deal with restlessness; it acts as a natural sedative to reduce anxiety. One of the most popular herbs for sleep, valerian root is also a herbal treatment for nerve and muscle disorders as well as fatigue and mental disorders. The tea contains essential oils extracted from the root of the valerian plant. While relieving your cramps and pains, it also stops your mind from racing and so that you can fall asleep more easily.

Peppermint  Drinking peppermint tea has a number of medicinal qualities to help conditions that can interfere with restful sleep, such as a nervous stomach, nausea, and other digestive and intestinal problems. A cup of peppermint tea at night naturally soothes  the body, preparing it for a restful night’s sleep. It also works well for headaches.

De-stress Your Body

Kiehls Creme de Corps Soy Milk Honey Whipped Body ButterThose long, hot baths (or showers) really can put your mind and body at ease and help you prep for bedtime. Escaping stress and clearing your mind can be as easy as simply massaging your scalp or calming your nerves with a long soak. Don’t fret, try out some new shampoo or body butter – it may be just what you need. I suggest Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter. Massage yourself with this luxurious formula infused with shea and jojoba butter, for maximum hydration and skin that’s soft and smooth to the touch.

Stop Counting Sheep

Why encourage a restless mind by counting sheep? At night you want to unwind and clear your head, not fill it with jibber-jabber to bore yourself to sleep. Instead, try to picture yourself in a serene setting (like the beach) anything that seems quite, serene, and free from outside stress. This way, you can meditate yourself to sleep so to speak.

Disconnect

You probably carry your phone with you every where you go, every single day – do you sleep with it though? It is not uncommon to have your phone next to your bed on the night stand so that in the morning you can immediately check your messages etc. But through the night, the last thing you need is another distraction to keep you up. Try turning the sound and vibrate off your phone (facing down so that the light won’t disturb you), or just turning it off completely to ensure a restful night.

Fake It: MAKE-UP FOR LOST TIME

Whether or not you got a full eight hours last night, the last thing you want to do is look like you had a rough night. Here’s a few tricks to help you look well rested, and feel ready to take on the day…

Wake Up Beautiful

Sure, that annoying alarm does it’s job by promptly waking you up, but it’s irritating. Wouldn’t you rather have the first thing you hear in the morning be welcoming while stimulating to your awareness and surroundings? Ditch that wretched buzzing alarm and try out something more harmonious and delightful – it could change how you look at waking up for good.

 Get Going

Foam Call

Days when you can’t hide from your agenda under covers, you can’t afford to spare not even one minute. Get going with a splash of water (a little colder than lukewarm) on your face to wake you up, or even take desperate measures and hit the shower! Though the water’s cold, it’s beneficial because you will be even more alert.  For an invigorating rinse off, try peppermint body washes that’ll wake you up head to toe. Try Soap & Glory’s Foam Call Body Wash. It’s a moisturizing body wash infused with grapeseed and peppermint oils, fruitiliquid fig, and orange waterjuice – perfect for that morning boost.

Scrub-a-dub!
Angels on Bare SkinRefresh your face, and scrub away the worries of yesterday behind. Use an exfoliating face wash to reveal healthy glowing skin, and get rid of ickyness. You may not be fully awake yet, but you’ll be ready to take on the day. Check out Lush Cosmetic’s Angels on Bare Skin exfoliating face cleanser. This gentle lavender scrub is preservative free, and fit for all skin types. For heavenly soft and balanced skin, this wash blended with ground almonds, rose, and lavender will help you gt there.
Freshen Up & Moisturize
Philosophy Breath of Fresh AirWell moisturized skin, is healthy skin; thus, when you moisturized you’ll look better rested. Take the time to show your skin a little t.l.c. especially your face. May I suggest Philosophy’s Take a Deep Breath Face Moisturizer? This oil-free formula is an energizing oxygen gel cream that is revitalizing and protective to your skin. The blend of antioxidants combat signs of stress while the oxygen detoxifies skin and supports skin cell respiration.

Mark Save the Day Anti-Acne Concealer Stick

Lighten Up
While there are a zillion eye creams that promise to help dark circles, none of them offer an instant fix. Concealer, on the other hand, is a sure thing—so start by choosing a creamy formula that is slightly lighter than your skin (but be careful not to go more than one shade lighter than your natural skin tone). Cover just the dark areas after applying foundation, not the entire under-eye, and resist the urge to overblend. A great product to try is the Save the Day Anti-Acne Concealer by mark.
NYX Liquid IlluminatorAdd Sparkle
Put just a tiny touch of shimmer cream right in that little hollow in the inner corners of the eyes. Use a golden color if you have dark skin, silvery or pearlescent if you’re pale, and then blend well with a Q-tip. You will instantly look refreshed and awake. Try a dab of Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator by NYX.
Defined Liner
Tarte EmphasEYES Waterproof Clay Shadow/Liner
To define your upper lashes, go with something a little less severe than black, like a charcoal or a chocolate brown, and push the point into the lash line as you go. Then wing it outward and upward just the tiniest bit at the end. This will give the illusion of more opened eyes. Try Tarte’s EmphasEYES Waterproof Clay Shadow/Liner. The deep chocolate and navy shades are great to achieve smoldering looks, or even striking liner if you wish.
Too Faced Sweethearts Perfect Flush BlushBlushing Beauty
Using cream, or baked powder blush, apply a light layer of bright blush. These formulas are great to give the appeal of blush that has melted into your skin so that it looks almost natural. Try applying the color slightly higher on the face than usual when you need to look more awake. Use your fingers to rub it on the highest point of the apples, right over the edge of the cheek bone, blurring that line a little will help draw attention away from any darkness or puffiness there. Check out Too Faced’s Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush for a baked blush trio combining peach coral, and bubble gum pink shades for a enhanced, primped glowing finish.

DIY Face Masks

Who doesn’t enjoy doing a relaxing, skin reviving face mask at home? Here are some different masks for you to try that will help you wind down and blow off some stress! They’re fun and easy to make – and include common household ingredients, enjoy!

For All Skin Types

Oatmeal and Yogurt Face Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp oatmeal, finely ground06-honey-and-yogurt
  • 1 tbsp live, organic yogurt (skip the flavored stuff)
  • A few drops of honey

Preparation:

Add the yogurt to the oatmeal in a small bowl and mix together.Warm a few drop of honey. To do this, warm a spoon under hot water for a minute, then add a few drops of honey to the spoon.Stir the honey into the yogurt and oatmeal mixture.Apply the mask to the face. Leave it on for 10 minutes, then rinse off with several splashes of warm water. Follow with a warm washcloth.Apply moisturizer.

imagesCoffee & Cocoa Mask

Ingredients:

  • 4 Tbsp. finely ground espresso or coffee beans (I use my own grinder, but already ground coffee and even instant coffee work, too)
  • 4 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder (your basic Hersheys is perfect here)
  • 8 Tbsp. dairy product. Choose whole milk, heavy cream, yogurt (must be unflavored!), almond milk or coconut milk. Use less dairy if you like a thicker paste. Substitutions are allowed: Try an egg instead of dairy if you are an egg mask lover, or substitute oils, such as olive oil, extra virgin coconut oil or almond oil if you have dehydrated skin. If using oils, halve the amount or it will be too runny.
  • 2 Tbsp. honey (if you have dry skin) or lemon juice (if you have oily skin)

Preparation:

If you have whole beans, finely grind beans in a grinder. Remember, beans should be finely ground so they don’t scratch your face. If you just made coffee, you can use the freshly brewed coffee grounds, although they won’t contain as much caffeine.Mix coffee and cocoa powder in a bowl.Add the dairy product and stir until a smooth paste forms. You can use less dairy if you like a thicker paste.Stir in the honey. (I like to warm up the honey in a warm water bath or in the microwave so it mixes better).Apply the paste to your clean face and neck.

Let the mask dry.

Wet a washcloth and press it to your face to loosen the mask, then rinse with warm water. If you have sensitive skin, you should avoid rubbing your face because the coffee grounds could potentially scratch your skin. It’s really up to you, you’ll get a feel for what your skin can take and how finely ground the coffee is.

You can store the leftover paste in the refrigerator for several days.

Egg Whites and Yogurt Mask

Ingredients:

  • 2 egg whites, separated from the yolk and placed in a bowl
  • 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt (I like Greek yogurt)

Preparation:

Separate the egg whites from a couple eggs and place them in a bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of yogurt (do not use flavored yogurt!). Mix them up and apply to face. Leave on face for a few minutes then rinse face in warm water, followed by a warm washcloth.

For Sensitive Skin/Acne Prone/Troubled Skin

Yogurt Face Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup natural yogurt (we like it just-out-of-the-fridge cold because it’s creamy and thick)
  • ½ cup oatmeal (any type of basic oatmeal works here)

Preparation:

Mix the ingredients together.
Apply to the skin for 10-15 minutes.
Wash off mask with a washcloth steamed in the microwave (careful that it’s not too hot).

strawberry-facial-maskStrawberry Mask

Ingredients:

  • 6 fresh strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Preparation:

De-stem the strawberries, and cut them up into small pieces. Create a pulp from the strawberries by mashing them with a fork or the bottom of a glass cup. Place the pulpy strawberries into a bowl.Add lemon juice, brown sugar and honey. Stir until combined. You can add more of any of the ingredients to create a consistency you like.Apply mask to face for 10 minutes and remove with a warm wet washcloth.

Banana and Honey Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 mashed banana
  • 1/4 cup oatmeal, cooked with milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tablespoon honey

Preparation:

Mix ingredients together. Massage onto face in a slow, circular motion and leave for 15 minutes. Rinse with tepid water. Oatmeal is high in nourishing vitamins and minerals; it gently cleanses and heals skin. Bananas contain vitamin A; eggs contain lecithin, a natural skin emollient; and honey helps to maintain the skin’s natural acid mantle.

For Oily Skin

Juice Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 egg whites
  • 3 tsp honey
  • 1 cup strawberries
  • Optional: 4 drops of your favorite essential oils

Preparation:

De-stem the strawberries and mash them with a fork until they are a pulp.Add the other ingredients and mix them together with a whisk.Smooth over face. Let it stay for 10 minutes, then rinse.

Cucumber and Oatmeal Mask

Ingredients:

  • About 1/3 of a cucumbercucumber
  • 1 Tsp. of Yogurt
  • 1 Cup oatmeal

Preparation:

Take a small cucumber piece, one tablespoon of yogurt and a cup of oatmeal. Chop cucumber into small pieces and put it in a blender. Put yogurt and oatmeal also in the blender and make a smooth paste. Apply this on the face and leave it for 10 minutes and rinse. This cleanses the skin pores effectively.

Oatmeal Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 boiled apple
  • One teaspoon of honey
  • Two teaspoons of ground oatmeal

Mix all the ingredients until you get an uniform mixture, apply on the face for ten minutes and wash carefully afterward.

  • 1 tsp powdered milk
  • 1 tbsp runny honey (microwave in microwavable bowl for 5 seconds)
  • 1 tsp aloe vera gel
  • 2 drops essential oil (tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, rose hip oil etc)

Preparation:

This is a classic milk mask for the face. Mix ingredients well, apply to face, let sit for 15 minutes, wash off with warm water. This recipe is enough for two.

  • 2 Tbsp smashed avocado
  • 3 tsp oatmeal powder (leave this out if making soft fudge, leave in if you want a harder texture)

Preparation:Mix all the ingredient until mass is consistent.
Apply on face, gently massaging so oatmeal can start exfoliating the dead skin cell layer.
Leave on for 15-20 minutes
Rinse off with lukewarm water.

A Guide to Red Lips

Screen-shot-2011-02-08-at-9.39.09-AMSeeing red?

From classy captivating red Marylin Monroe lips, to fire cracker red Gwen Stefani lips, every girl needs a signature red lip. However, there are a few things you need to know about choosing the right shade of red to complement your skin tone and your overall look. More importantly, there are even ways to make that eye catching lip even more irresistible that you might not already know…

Rule No. 1: Start with a Clean Slate

Chapstick is great, but that doesn’t quite satisfy as a full lip treatment. To soothe your lips, try a lip exfoliator. Before you apply lipstick, the exfoliant will ensure a smooth finish by clearing away dryness, and healing chapped lips. Try:
Lush Cosmetics / Lip Treatments
Philosophy / Kiss Me
Fresh / Sugar Lip Polish @ Sephora
Tarte / Maracuja Lip Exfoliant @ Sephora
Bliss / Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub

    • If you’re in the mood for a DIY treatment: take a tablespoon of honey, one tablespoon of sugar, one teaspoon of olive oil, and one teaspoon of vaseline or shea butter and mix in a small container. Apply a dime size amount and rub onto lips,  rinse with warm water. Use within 2 weeks time, twice a week for soft lips.

Rule No. 2: Picking the Right Color

Though classic true red is universally flattering, knowing which colors actually complement your skin will help you find the right match.

  • If you have an olive, or tan complexion, try Nars Semi-Matte Lipsick in Jungle Red. Note that shades with orange and golden undertones are most complementing.
  • If you have lighter, pale skin, you want to keep an eye out for reds that have a blue undertone. This won’t totally wash out your look, and will not overwhelm your complexion. For example, check-out Buxom Full-Bodied Lipstick in Scoundrel.
  • If you have a darker skintone, pay attention to shades that have a stronger pink undertone. Clinique High Impact Lip Colour in Red-y to Wear is a great example of the kind of shade that is most flattering for you.

Rule No. 3: Tactful Liner

Next, apply a touch of flesh-tone concealer to provide an even base — your own natural lip color can actually alter the hue. With a lip pencil in a complementary shade, fill in lips entirely. Before you even start to apply your lipstick, trace the frame of your lips and the inner rim of your lips. To enhance that flawless red lip, you need to ensure your lips are well lined. Not only will this draw attention to your overall frame, but the liner will keep your lips in place and away from your teeth. Nothing is more distracting than a poorly lined red lip.

Rule No. 4: Bombshell, Not Clown

Prevent the red lipstick from “bleeding” by applying a touch of concealer around the border of your lips. Don’t play up your eyes. Bold red lips look best with a clean, polished eye. Too much drama around the eye can be distorting – in this case less is more! A little mascara and beige shadow will do.

Perfect Pampered Mani

The Step-By-Step Manicure

Via http://www.thedailymakeover.com Illustration by Candace Napier

Need some tips to make your tips look salon fresh, but at home? Skip the salon!

The practicality of DIY manicures have never been more sensible; given that so many products are available to the everyday beauty-enthusiast, and they’re a money saver! Treat your hands with the tenderness they deserve after a long, tiresome week- it may be the pampering pick-me-up you’ve been longing for!

What you’ll need:

  • Nail Clipper
  • Nail File
  • Cuticle Oil
  • A Bowl of Warm Water
  • Cuticle Tool
  • Nail Buffer
  • Moisturizing Hand Cream
  • Base Coat, Nail Polish, Top Coat

Step 1: Trim Your Nails

If your nails need  a trim, grab that nail clipper and cut them to your desired length.

    • Shorter nails are more manageable for those who type, cook, and do a lot of “hands on” activities.
    • For those who can maintain longer nails, you can skip trimming and file instead.

Step 2: File & Shape

Once your nails are trimmed, edge them out by filing with a natural nail file, and shape them. Be sure to consider what shape (Oval, Almond, or Square) flatters your hands best to make hands look more feminine.

Step 3: Nourish with Cuticle Oil

Time to revive those soft, healthy tips. Take your favorite cuticle oil (oils can be found in any beauty store or drug store where you would find nail polish etc.) and apply from the nail fold, to the edges of your cuticle and tip of the nail. Apply to all of your fingers.

Step 4: Soak

To retain moisture, soak your hands in warm water for  about two minutes. For maximum moisture, add a pump of moisturizing soap to the water.

Step 5: Push Back Cuticles

To help prevent hangnails and to create a cleaner canvas when we are applying nail polish, use a cuticle tool to your cuticle back. However, be sure to not apply too much force. If needed, clip away any dead skin with a cuticle nipper. Always use caution when clipping to prevent cutting yourself.

Step 6: Buff For Shine

Using a nail buffer, gently swipe against your nails to add a natural, healthy shine and to enhance smoothness.

Step 7: Moisturize & Massage

Using your favorite hand cream, apply an appropriate amount to your hands and nails, and massage in liberally. This relaxing treatment is nourishing to your hands and nails. For extra pampering, wrap your hands with a hot towel after massaging (heat for about 30 seconds in the microwave).

Step 8: Apply Polish

If you wish to apply polish, use a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover to remove the cream from your nails. This is to ensure we have a clean canvas to apply our base coat. Apply one layer of base coat, two layers of polish, and one layer of top coat (of course only apply top coat once the polish is completely dry to avoid streaking).
