From Wand to Lash: A Mascara Guide

mascara-wanderApplying Mascara – The Right Way

  • Don’t pump the wand in and out of the bottle. This pushes excess air into the tube which will make the mascara dry out faster causing exactly what you want to avoid: clumping and flaking. Instead, gently twist the back and forth or in circular motions to gather the desired amount of product.
  •  Before applying mascara, consider curling you lashes with an eyelash curler. If you decide to curl your lashes, begin at the root of the lashes being careful not to get any skin into the eyelash curler. Press the curler together and hold for about 10 seconds and move the curler out to the end of your lashes and repeat. Again, this step is optional but it does make for longer looking lashes and opens the eye.
  •  When you remove the wand from the bottle make sure to scrape off any excess mascara from the wand, especially towards the tip of the wand. This will help you avoid making your lashes clumpy and unwanted mess.
  • For the top lashes, look straight forward, holding the wand horizontally, place at the root of your lashes. Using a back-and-forth, wiggling motion to keep lashes from clumping together. While moving the wand up your lashes and sweep upward, to help give your lashes a curled effect. Keep repeating this until you get your lashes as thick as you want, usually 2 coats is enough.
  • Clinique Bottom Lash MascaraFor the bottom lashes, tilt your head forward slightly to keep from getting mascara elsewhere on your face. Hold the wand vertically and use wiggling motions starting at the roots, towards the tips of your lower lashes. In case of mess, you may want to fold a tissue in half, holding the edge just under your eye to prevent smearing etc. If desired, you can even purchase a mascara specifically for your lower lashes. Check out Clinique’s Bottom Lash Mascara : the brush was engineered to grasp and coat your tiniest lashes; while the expert formula resists pesky formulas.

Keep Lashes From Clumping

Lash combs are great to keep your lashes from clumping.  To use a lash comb, first applymascara at the lash base, and then wiggle the lash comb through to the tips of your lashes.
Don’t Be Afraid to Mix Mascaras

It’s okay to have two favorite mascaras, so why not combine them? Easily make your lashes pop by applying one coat of lengthening mascara, followed by one coat of a volumizing mascara.

Try a Colored Mascara

Estee-Lauder-Holiday-2010-Sumptuous-Extreme-Lash-Multiplying-Volume-Mascara

Basic mascara rules are simple:  Black works for everyone but can be harsh on light-skinned blondes.  Blondes should opt for brown/black by day and reserve black for night.  Burgundy or plum colors make blue eyes pop, as do blue mascaras.  Purple mascara looks great on brown eyes. Here’s a great example of hued mascara by Estee Lauder, it’s the Sumptous Extreme Lash Multiplying Volume Mascara in Extreme Violet. Estee Lauder carries a variety of colors from this line to add that pop of color to enhance your eyes.

Use a Mascara PrimerSmashbox Layer Lash Primer

Just like you do before applying foundation, prep your lashes with a primer.  The primer can help you get the most out of your mascara, while working with the formula to get maximum, lasting effects. Try Smashbox Layer Lash Primer, packed with strengthening and conditioning panthenol for longer, healther lashes.

Wait to Blink & Double-Check Once Dry

Before you blink or even think about touching around your eye area, wait a few minutes to let the mascara dry to prevent smudging, smearing, and raccoon eyes.

L’oréal Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara

Loreal Voluminous Million Lashes Waterproof

Wimpy lashes turn big and beautiful in a few smooth, clump-free swipes.

(Shown in waterproof formula)

The Millionizer brush has a multitude of bristles to separate lashes for a fanned-out lash effect. The excess wiper removes excess mascara. It leaves the brush coated with just the right amount of formula to achieve maxed up volume with no overload and no clumps.

MAC Haute & Naughty Mascara

MAC Haute and Naughty Lashes

The double, screw-on tops are placed one over another on a single tube: the hot pink cap puts less color on the wand; the sparkly purple one beneath loads the brush with more product for a thicker application.

The top precision wiper combs lashes for length and hits the teeny corner hairs and bottom baby ones; the other gives plenty of fullness and lush-looking color, but with a few more clumps.

More Curl

What Turns You Off About Make-Up Products?

Wal-Mart Haul

In preparation to my attempt at a 20 Day Make-Up Challenge I am doing this week, I picked up a few things from Wal-Mart that I am really excited to get creative with!

IMG_3932[1]

What I got:

  • Eye Candy Sparkle Cream Eyeshadow & Glitter Eyeshadow by Hard Candy

I have heard about, and seen Hard Candy products, but have been a little hesitant to try them out. Their adorable packaging and generously-sized products (ranging from face primers to body shimmer and everything in between) have always caught my eye; last night I looked them up to find out more. Sold exclusively at Wal-Mart, Hard Candy brings spunk to the cosmetics industry with fun, rocker-chic edge. According to SheSpeaks.Com , customers have rated this brand a 3.6 out of 5 stars – not bad!Hard Candy Eye Candy

What made me finally give-in and try it for myself was the fact that they are very affordable (ranging from $3 – $20), so I wouldn’t feel like I wasted a lot of money, if I’m not completely satisfied.

Anyway, the Sparkle Cream Eye Shadow and the Glitter Eyeliner (in Flashy) actually came as a set – which I loved! I have been skeptical about different glitter eye shadows because most formulas are just powders and I had read reviews where customers were dissatisfied with such products because it is messy to apply, and is faulty in that the looseness of the powder makes it easy for the glitter to end up elsewhere on your face. I’m hoping that this cream formula will be less disappointing and the liner will be the perfect accent!

  • Glamoflauge Heavy Duty Concealer with Concealer Pencil by Hard Candy

Glamoflauge

Who could resist buying some concealer while on a make-up haul? Since I caved and broke whatever barrier was standing between me and Hard Candy products, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to test out some of their Glamoflauge Heavy Duty Concealer with Concealer Pencil in Tan. As another dual purchase, I hadn’t realized until I got home how large this tube of glam actually is! This already pleases me and I look forward to using it very soon. They aren’t kidding about the “heavy-duty” either, on the back of the package they explain that this formula “blends flawlessly into skin, hides everything from dark circles and blemishes to tattoos” – so for anyone looking to conceal their tats, go out and pick up some Glamoflauge for yourself.

  • Wear Infinité Studio Secrets Professional Eyeshadow by L’oréal

Studio Secrets Eye ShadowThis L’oréal shadow in Seashell was the perfect secret ingredient I had been searching for to create smooth, matte finish eye looks. I couldn’t pass this up because often it is a little difficult to come by matte white or off-white shadows; it seems that everything these days has some sort of shimmery, satin finish. This bone shade is suttle enough to use to set the concealer under your brows, or even as a highlight. L’oréal always delivers quality, professional worthy products, so I know this will be a great addition to my make-up bag.

  • Colour Riche le Gloss by L’oréal

Le Gloss Plum RushI love the Colour Riche lip line by L’oréal – the products are worth every dime, and help you give your look that perfectly polished finish. Particularly, the le Gloss line has been one of my favorites for a while now. The color selection is endless (all true to color), creates glazed lips, and feels very smooth. I felt a little daring today and went out of my comfort zone with this deep purple gloss in Plum Rush. I am really looking forward to creating looks with an edge, and I know this product will do exactly that, plus it smells good!

  • Super Lustrous Lipstick by Revlon

Normally, I like to wear nude lipsticks with light hints of pinks or oranges just because I think they don’t wash out to my look nor overwhelmingly add age and they’re totally capable of being an every day look. Revlon Super Lustrous LipstickSo I had to pick up a new nude shade, this time with stronger orange undertones rather than pinks. I got this Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Just Enough Buff. Most of my lipsticks are by NYX, but I have heard that this particular line of Revlon lipsticks are long lasting, and smooth; they even have great hues without drawing out moisture from your lips. Even so, this lipstick was very affordable and I suspect will be worth it.

  • Color Tattoo Metal 24 Hour Eyeshadow by MaybellineMaybelline Color Tattoo Metal 24 Hr

I’ve been wanting to try out the Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadow by Maybelline for a while now, and I thought – why not now? The one I picked out is from the “Metals” line in Electric Blue. The creamy, saturated, long-lasting color will be perfect for capturing those dark, yet bold, captivating looks. When I saw this shadow, I immediately became inspired by the night sky, so I plan to pull of something of that nature.

    • Lasting Finish By Kate Lipstick by Rimmel LondonLasting Finish By Kate Moss

After posting about red lipsticks , I was definitely in the mood to get some. This particular one from Ka

te Moss’ Line with Rimmel, Lasting Finish, was a ‘must-buy’. Though I am not much into wearing red lipsticks, I wanted to experiment a little with the burgundy and berry shades of red trend that is making a come back right now; this shade is called Rossetto. In contrast to my NYX lipsticks, this line of lip colour is supposed to last for a full 8 hours with a highly saturated color and has soft, smoothing, moisturizing effects.

  • Perfectly Glamourous Lashes by Salon Perfect

Last but not least, I changed up my falsies for something a little more dramatic this time: I got Salon Perfect’s Perfectly Glamourous Lashes in 28. Prior to switching my everyday brand to Ardell, I used Salon Perfect for about a year. This brand is great because their lashes are lightweight, easy to apply and very comfortable. They are less expensive than Ardell and are sold at Wal-Mart. The pair of 28’s I purchased are long and full bodied, so all of the desired drama I wish to play up in my eyes will not fall short. Anyone who would like to start wearing falsies should consider the Starter Kit line from Salon perfect, they range from individual lashes (for a little bit more natural look) to strip lashes for extra drama.

Perfectly Glamourous 28

I hope this post has given you some ideas about different products to go out and try for yourself, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for my 20 Day Challenge posts! Feel free to leave comments about your take on these products, or any alternatives!

A Guide to Red Lips

Screen-shot-2011-02-08-at-9.39.09-AMSeeing red?

From classy captivating red Marylin Monroe lips, to fire cracker red Gwen Stefani lips, every girl needs a signature red lip. However, there are a few things you need to know about choosing the right shade of red to complement your skin tone and your overall look. More importantly, there are even ways to make that eye catching lip even more irresistible that you might not already know…

Rule No. 1: Start with a Clean Slate

Chapstick is great, but that doesn’t quite satisfy as a full lip treatment. To soothe your lips, try a lip exfoliator. Before you apply lipstick, the exfoliant will ensure a smooth finish by clearing away dryness, and healing chapped lips. Try:
Lush Cosmetics / Lip Treatments
Philosophy / Kiss Me
Fresh / Sugar Lip Polish @ Sephora
Tarte / Maracuja Lip Exfoliant @ Sephora
Bliss / Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub

    • If you’re in the mood for a DIY treatment: take a tablespoon of honey, one tablespoon of sugar, one teaspoon of olive oil, and one teaspoon of vaseline or shea butter and mix in a small container. Apply a dime size amount and rub onto lips,  rinse with warm water. Use within 2 weeks time, twice a week for soft lips.

Rule No. 2: Picking the Right Color

Though classic true red is universally flattering, knowing which colors actually complement your skin will help you find the right match.

  • If you have an olive, or tan complexion, try Nars Semi-Matte Lipsick in Jungle Red. Note that shades with orange and golden undertones are most complementing.
  • If you have lighter, pale skin, you want to keep an eye out for reds that have a blue undertone. This won’t totally wash out your look, and will not overwhelm your complexion. For example, check-out Buxom Full-Bodied Lipstick in Scoundrel.
  • If you have a darker skintone, pay attention to shades that have a stronger pink undertone. Clinique High Impact Lip Colour in Red-y to Wear is a great example of the kind of shade that is most flattering for you.

Rule No. 3: Tactful Liner

Next, apply a touch of flesh-tone concealer to provide an even base — your own natural lip color can actually alter the hue. With a lip pencil in a complementary shade, fill in lips entirely. Before you even start to apply your lipstick, trace the frame of your lips and the inner rim of your lips. To enhance that flawless red lip, you need to ensure your lips are well lined. Not only will this draw attention to your overall frame, but the liner will keep your lips in place and away from your teeth. Nothing is more distracting than a poorly lined red lip.

Rule No. 4: Bombshell, Not Clown

Prevent the red lipstick from “bleeding” by applying a touch of concealer around the border of your lips. Don’t play up your eyes. Bold red lips look best with a clean, polished eye. Too much drama around the eye can be distorting – in this case less is more! A little mascara and beige shadow will do.

General “Must Knows”

  • For smooth applications and to practice good hygiene, always wash your bushes and applicators at least once a week. Various brush and applicator shampoos can be found at your local drugstore in the beauty aisle or anywhere else you purchase cosmetics.  – Your skin will thank you for it too!
  • Always be conscious of your skin type (dry, oily, combination, or normal) and sensitivity (if you are allergic to any ingredients commonly found in products, and if you have blemish or acne prone skin). Knowing your skin type and sensitivity will make shopping for any product, brushes and applicators even more successful and will help you determine what works best for you.
    • If your have dry skin; look for products that have moisturizing effects and SPF.
    • If you have oily skin; keep an eye out for oil-based products. Products with naturally occurring moisturizers, and even oil-free products are best.
    • If you have combination skin; be sure to find products specifically for combination skin  – they are not as uncommon as you would think!
    • If you have normal skin; be conscious of which ingredients work best with your skin and try to stick to products that have them in order to keep your skin’s balance.
    • If you have sensitive skin; your best bet is to stick with products that acknowledge your sensitivity and are made with natural ingredients to help calm your skin.
  • Do your research. To help minimize your time spent dwelling in the beauty aisle, its never a bad thing to  prep yourself on what you are looking for, prior to purchasing products. Go on your favorite make-up supply destinations’ websites and  read some reviews on different products or see how other customers have rated them. This way, you won’t have to make those impulse buys anymore.
    • Try Ulta orSephora  for thorough customer reviews and ratings, as well as popular products.
  • Primer is premiere to your make-up routine! Primer is a routine must; using a primer after you have applied your daily moisturizer and before your apply foundation will help give your make-up the long lasting feature. Not only will you get the mileage out of your make-up, but primers indicated to minimize pores, get rid of shine from oil, and even provide essential moisture your skin needs makes it the backbone that supports your look.
    • ALSO: Eye primer will be your best friend if your eye make-up tends to crease or smudge.
  • A little bit goes a long way! Do not overwhelm yourself with the idea of being perfect, and relying on make-up to perfect you. Remember that each product has it’s own purpose (though some are multipurpose). Concentrating on your delicate skin, remember these things:
    • Foundation – lightly tones your skin. It’s main purpose is to help even your skin tone, while  not completely erasing imperfections. Foundations primarily should be applied in small amounts to allow your skin to breathe and not clog your pores. Additives that combat skin concerns like aging, acne or oil control allow your foundation to be a helping hand for your skin.
    • Concealer – helps highlight, and gives fuller coverage than foundation. There are many different types of concealer (full-coverage, corrective, and highlighting) to treat additional problem areas that your foundation may not have toned. Primarily, this acts as your blemish eraser and corrector by blending into your foundation.
    • Tinted Moisturizer- for those of you who are just starting out and are new to face make-up, I highly recommend using a tinted moisturizer or even a “BB” or beauty cream. These are greatly beneficial to your natural, delicate skin, and have incredibly lightweight formula so it doesn’t even feel like you have make-up on.
  • SPF is your friend. Though it may not be sunny year round, products with SPF are beneficial because no matter how visible the sun’s rays may be, SPF protects your skin from the damaging affects. It has even been proven that products with SPF can help delay the appearance of premature aging.
  • The many shades of you.. As the summer sun emerges and fades, our skin tone tends to change too. More than likely, you won’t always be the same definite shade, so in order to match your shade through the seasons, have one shade of foundation for when you are your darkest and another for when you are your lightest during the year. This way, you can continue to look flawless year-round without any miss-match.
  • Don’t smear! Slathering your face with make-up, whether it be foundation, eye shadow, or blush, seems a little barbaric. Instead, use applicators to gather just enough (you can always add more if you absolutely need it) and then gently dab, pat and blend. This works great to enhance your eyes with shadow, and to soften out rosy cheeks so that you don’t resemble a clown.
  • Make-up remover without stripping your skin. At the end of the day before you cleanse your face, always use a make-up remover to gently and thoroughly  make-up and dirt from your skin. Ranging from wipes, spritzers, and liquids, there is a broad spectrum of removers to find the right fit for you, that will shy away from over drying or stripping your skin from its natural balance.
